Moving Tips & Advice

If this is the first time you have moved or the tenth, hiring professional movers can keep the head-aches away. This might be a short distance move, for example from Lewisville to Bedford, or long distance. It can be for one room, or an entire house. Movers can be hired to do the work for you.

When choosing a moving company, you need to be careful. Unfortunately, there are people trying to scam movers out of their money. Whether they claim to be apartment movers or office movers, they are there waiting for the next victim. This can be avoided, following some simple rules to find a moving company you can trust. You want to feel comfortable, that you made the right decision.

First, you need names of movers that are local to you. Ask friends and family members if they would recommend any. Call local real estate agencies, inform them you need furniture movers, do they have any preference.

Second, start making some phone calls. This is not for a quote, that needs to be done after they see your stuff. It is not a solid quote if they give one over the phone. This is a time for you to ask questions about the company. Ask how many moves they have made, if they contract their equipment or own it. Inquire about how long they have been in the moving business. Even though their answers to these should not disqualify them, it helps you to get a look at the company you will possibly be working with. While on the phone, make arrangements for an in-home assessment from at least three companies. Most moving scams, do not like to take the time to come to the home to give the estimate.

Third, is obtaining three in-home assessments. This also is a great time to receive information about the company. Make sure that everything that will be moved, is shown to the estimator. Tell them anything that might make the move complicated. For example, stairs they will have to climb. This helps to get an accurate estimate. If an estimate is much lower than the others, it most likely is not true. There are probably hidden fees that will be added later.

Fourth, now you have the three estimates to choose from. Make sure you understand this document completely. If there is any of it you do not understand, ask them to explain. Local moves and long distance moves, are charged differently. They will offer insurance to you, make sure to read about it in its entirely. The company will have an inventory list of your stuff, check this for accuracy.

Final step before choosing the furniture movers, is checking with the Better Business Bureau.

Now that you have all this information, choosing is easier. Pick the movers you want to use. Remember this mover is responsible for everything that you own, you want it to arrive as promised. Doing your homework will ensure this happens.
